2008 Hispanic Health and Safety Fair

Some 3500 visitors took advantage of free medical testing and other services at SRG's 20th Anniversary Hispanic Health and Safety Fair, held on Sunday, June 29th, at the Kern County Fairgrounds.  Occupying 2 large buildings off of the Main Plaza, the Fair ran from 11 AM until 4 PM and offered tests and screens for cholesterol and blood sugar levels, blood pressure, cardiovascular function, stroke risk, and foot problems.  Non profit organizations, including the American Cancer Society, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Alzheimer's Disease Association, the Kern County Dept. of Health, among others, provided important information about available programs and services

The safety side of the Fair offered free child ID cards, sponsored by Catholic Healthcare West's Mercy and Bakersfield Memorial Hospitals.  Local car dealers Barber Honda and Motor City Auto Center worked with the California Highway Patrol to demonstrate proper use of car safety seats.  Our fire and police departments provided info on fire and crime prevention, with the Kern County Fire Department's special kids' fire safety trailer on hand to teach youngsters what to do in the event of a home fire.  Our local bicycling advocacy group, Bike Bakersfield, handed out bike safety information for both kids and adults.

Except for food (served up by El Palenque Restaurant), everything at the Fair was free, including parking, courtesy of Baber Honda.  This year's attendance represents one of the largest ever, indicating that health and safety remain important areas of interest and concern within our Hispanic communities.  Even after 20 years, our annual Fair remains an important community event.
